KCB Renews its Athletics Commitment for the Third Year

KCB announced an enhanced sponsorship package of Kshs 7.5million to support the 2009/2010 Cross Country series.

Speaking during the launch at Kencom House, The KCB Group Chief Executive said the investment will support the organization of the event, including the national championships and provide cash prizes for top winners.

“KCB is investing Kshs 5.2million in 2009/2010 season to support the organization of the seven-event series. Out of this money Kshs 1.5million will be prize-money for the six countrywide meets whereas 560,000 will go to winners at the national championships. The rest of the funds will support logistics and hospitality for the series” he said.

The bank will also spend an additional Kshs 2million to brand the venues and support activities that will enable them to capitalize on business opportunities during the season.

Dubbed the KCB/Athletics Kenya National Cross Country Series, the competitive events for this season will take place in Machakos, Kericho, Nairobi, Meru, Kisii and Eldoret respectively.

The Chief Executive said the series has enabled Athletics Kenya to identify good runners who compete for a place in the Kenya Team to the World Cross Country Championships.

“We have been encouraged by the success witnessed in the past two seasons, with each event attracting an average of 600 runners and the national championship bringing close to 1000 top athletes” he added.

Receiving the donation, the Chairman of Athletics Kenya Isaiah Kiplagat commended KCB for their support over the past two years that has enabled the Kenyan team to participate in Edinburgh, Scotland and Amman Jordan during the World Cross Country Championships.

“Indeed KCB will be remembered for a long time for the role it has played in developing sports in Kenya especially athletics,” he said.

Oduor-Otieno said that KCB will continue supporting sports in Kenya in the year 2008 for brand exposure and visibility.

“Next year we shall continue with our ongoing partnership with Kenya Motorsport Federation for the KCB Kenya National Rally Championship and the Professional Golfers of Kenya for the KCB Pro-Am Golf Tour among other engagements,” he said.
